Company Overview

Our client is a ship management company forming part of the European headquarters for a major Japanese ship owner. The company is responsible for the technical management of LNG carriers. The Company presently manages 15 LNGC’s that comprise of conventional steam, slow speed diesel and tri-fuel diesel electric with both membrane and Moss type containment systems.

Organisational Context

Due to an internal transfer, the Company seeks to fill the position of a Senior Technical Superintendent to supervise a team of technical superintendents within the technical department. The successful candidate will coordinate the activities ensuring safe and efficient operations supervising all aspects of maintenance and repair to a fleet of either 5 specialised motor / TFDE or 10 conventional LNGC’s. Reporting to the Technical Manager, the candidate will attend weekly operational and monthly management meetings. The candidate will also be expected to work alongside other members of the ship management and commercial teams on a variety of projects.

Purpose of the Position

To provide expert guidance, supervision and direct support to a technical team comprising of upto 3 superintendents and the vessels onboard management on all matters related to maintenance, repair including budget development, monitoring and the identification of budget variances. Responsibilities also include superintendency of assigned vessels and attendance world-wide and management of repair periods in dry-dock as required. The Senior Technical SI is expected to re-assign support cover within his team due to staff absences.

Core Tasks and Activities
• Supervision of Technical SI’s
• Responsible for all aspects of maintenance, cargo care, budget control / purchasing and safe manning for vessels under his care ensuring compliance with Company policy, SMS, PMS and Business Manual.
• Technical supervision of assigned vessels, dealing with routine and non-routine maintenance and repair (M & R).
• Attends vessels world wide to supervise scheduled and unscheduled M & R, pre-load / discharge meetings, owners and charterers forums.
• Monitors perfomance of the vessel at sea and in port including berthing and mooring operations.
• Conducts ship inspections
• Prepares vessel-operating budgets and controls operating costs within agreed budgets.
• Prepares major repair specifications and supervises major repair periods at shipyard,
• Administers guarantee claims on ship builders.
• Prepares monthly Planned Maintenance Status Report.
• Distributes routine technical bulletins and class reports to the vessels.
• Work on longer-term projects e.g. planned maintenance systems and capital projects.
• Response and follow-up to vessels technical correspondence.
• Handles hull and machinery insurance matters for each vessel.
• Arranges surveys for statutory and Classification Society surveys.
• Liaises with Fleet Personnel on matters related to engineering sea staff.
• Appraises Technical SI’s, Chief Engineers and in consultaion with Operations Dept. Masters for vessel unders his care.
• Interviews prospective senior engine room staff.
• Brief/de-brief Chief Engineers.
• Carry out and assist as required with risk assessments, accident / incident investigations and prepare reports.
• Participates in goal setting, identification of improvements and management of change processes
• Attends weekly and monthly meetings.

Location

Based in the City of London the job will be essentially desk based and involves international travel.

Qualities Qualifications and Experience
• Demonstrated strong leadership in a shore based
position.
• Self motivated team player
• Clear communicator with good inter-personal
skills
• Good time management skills
• Adaptable and flexible attitude
• Certificate of Competency to Class 1 (Steam or Motor)
• Previous experience in ship management at
supervisory level
• Experience as Ch Engineer on-board LNGC’s
(strongly preferred)
• Knowledge of Shipnet PMS software (desirable)
• Advanced MS Office (Excel) Skills
• Professional qualifications in an engineering / elctronics field would be an advantage

Remuneration: Competitive based on experience (73-78k)
